Agristo selects its ideal potato suppliers close to its different production sites. We have strict conditions concerning supply and quality such as the required certificates of quality.

Because of the location of our different production sites, Agristo receives potato supplies from almost the entire West- European potato cluster.

The potatoes delivered to Agristo must in every respect meet the most severe requirements concerning food safety and intrinsic quality. In order to examine the incoming loads of potatoes in an objective and well-balanced way, Agristo has developed a thorough  methodology involving Production, Sampling and Inspection.

The contact with the grower

We collaborate closely with the potato growers and discuss before the start which varieties they will plant. We supply them with the seed-potatoes. For the purchase of potatoes we use both seasonal contracts and daily purchases, always in direct contact with the grower.

The Incas

The origins  of the potato lie in South-America. For the Incas, the potato was part of their basic food. In the middle of the 16th century Spanish conquerors came across the potato and took a load to their country of origin.

How old?

Research has proved that potatoes were eaten in 4500 before Christ. In an abyss in the region of Lima (Peru) researchers found potato rests from that period.

Holidays

To harvest potatoes (manually) the whole family used to work together. So at the moment of the harvest the children didn’t go to school. This motivated the Belgian authorities to introduce autumn holidays.

The birth of the fries

At the end of the 17th century lots of poor Belgians caught small fish they fried for dinner. In winter the rivers froze and fishing was too dangerous. They decided to cut potatoes in the form of fish and fried them. The chip was born!

The name ‘Bintje’

In 1905 the variety ‘Bintje’ received its name when school principal Klaas de Vries was growing different varieties of potatoes with his pupils. He named the most beautiful variety after his most industrious student, Bintje Jansma.

Museum of fries

Do you want to know more? Belgium has founded an entire museum dedicated to fries. De Frietmuseum in  Bruges is the only museum in the world dedicated to the origins and tasting of chips.
