Snacking has outgrown l’apéro: quick comfort all day long

Retail

Snacking is no longer a side note. Let’s zoom in on our French market, where it’s now an all day habit shaped by air fryer adoption, convivial apéro culture, and shoppers looking for small, premium feeling treats they can make fast, especially in the afternoon. Frozen potatoes fit perfectly when we make the moment obvious at shelf.

According to Gifam GfK, in France, air fryers have moved from curiosity to mainstream: +140% value growth in 2024, 2.6 million units sold, and 27% of households now equipped. Making air fryers one of the strongest engines behind small appliance growth. This dynamic matters for our category: more air fryers in French kitchens = more snack sized, “just a little something” potato moments.

As highlighted in our 2026 trend report, in mature frozen markets, the air fryer effect shows links to snacking growth, where potatoes evolve from a side to a moment in its own. In the UK, 63% of retail consumers typically use an air fryer for frozen potato products, afternoon snacking accounts for 9% of usage (UK) and 15% (Ireland), and morning snacking is rising in both the UK and France.

From side dish to small ritual

Think about how French households actually snack today. The air fryer is already on the counter; the freezer holds a few “sure bets.” At 10h30, a quick pause becomes a tiny reward ... two or three noisettes crisped in minutes beside a yogurt. 15h30 turns into a mini comfort break—a handful of funny shapes that make kids smile (and adults steal a few). Come l’apéro, friends drop by unplanned; a tray of sweet potato fries, croquettes or mini gratins hits the air fryer, and in under ten minutes there’s food that looks a bit premium without the effort.

What’s changed isn’t the product—it’s the moment. In our 2026 trends work we see potatoes shifting from “the side” to “the small ritual” people build their day around: indulgence + vitality in the morning, then indulgence + comfort + convenience in the afternoon. Any-time bites for any-time moments.

And the broader market is moving the same way. The NIQ Retail Spend Barometer saw snack purchases in French FMCG baskets grew +2.5% (value) in Q3 2024, even as shoppers remained selective proof that “little joys” still earn their place. Layer on the cultural backdrop: the apéro ritual begs for savory snacks as a social moment—perfect territory for snack coded frozen potatoes to live next to tapenades and charcuterie.

Formats "fait comme un chef"

When the moment calls for quick comfort with a hint of “fait comme un chef”, fun-sized and premium formats, such as crunchies, noisettes, sweet potato fries or gratins consistently over-deliver. four formats consistently over deliver. These win because they’re visually snackable, share easily, and, in France, carry a premium aura. The kind of things people perceive as tricky to pull off from scratch. Design them air fryer first (cut size, coating, portion logic) and you turn a five minute window into a little, reliable payoff.

Make the moment obvious

Imagine a shopper turning into frozen with a snack in mind, not a side. What reassures them in seconds?

  1. Front of pack air fryer clarity: “Crispy in 5 minutes, less oil.”

  2. Snack coded pack designs & sizes: stand up pouches or small boxes that feel made for solo or share.

  3. Aisle logic: a visible “Snack & Share” zone by frozen apéritifs/appetisers so discovery happens in the right decision flow.

These aren’t cosmetic tweaks—they’re conversion boosters we’ve outlined in retail webinar. And with air fryer ownership at 27% of French households and growing, these cues meet the kitchen that already exists.

What success looks like

Post reset, track attachment to apéritif items, velocity of snack size vs family packs, uplift from air fryer call outs (click through online, take rate in store), and the share of afternoon vs morning purchases. If the story is told clearly at shelf, you’ll see snacking add new moments—not just borrow from dinner.
